Preferred Specimen
Vaginal swab of exudate , or secretions placed in 5 cc of sterile 0.85% saline, or a urinalysis sample.
Instructions
Trichomonas is a fragile protozoan organism requiring specimen to arrive within 1/2 hour of collection. 1. Collect vaginal specimen with a culture swab. 2. Place swab in a sterile culture transport tube with a small amount of sterile saline. 3. Label tube with patient's full name,DOB, date and time of collection and type of specimen. Note: 1. Vaginal creams or jellies may interfere with the motility of the organism and should be avoided.

It will be noted on the results "For optimal specimen integrity, testing should occur within 30 minutes of collection. When testing is delayed, false negative results are possible. Because of this, obtaining an accurate time of collection is essential. The location of collection is responsible to log the time of collection on the specimen container and transport the specimen to the lab immediately."
