  • Multiple specimens collected on a single patient should be submitted separately and be accompanied by its own separate order and transported within its own sealed bag.

Instructions
  1. Using a lesion swab (or white-top culture swab), swab the pustule / lesion vigorously.
  2. Place the swab into viral culture media (VTM, UTM, or equivalent) tube.
  3. Label specimen at the bedside to ensure proper patient identification.
  4. Refrigerate sample IMMEDIATELY (Room Temp Unacceptable)

Transport Container
3mL of Viral Culture Media (VCM)
Other acceptable transport media: VTM, UTM or equivalent 


Transport Temperature
Refrigerate (or Freeze) sample immediately.
**Transport on Ice to SRH - Fill two ziploc bags with ice (check freezer for pre-filled bags). Place biohazard specimen bag that contains the specimen and requisition in a second biohazard bag. Place 2 ice-filled bags and specimen in the larger biohazard bag.

Room temperature is unacceptable - specimen will be rejected if received at room temperature.
