Instructions
Exposure on hospital property
- Report exposure to Employee Health, House Nursing Supervisor (if Employee Health is closed), designated officer, or Medical provider.
- Enter appropriate order in computer or complete downtime requisition. Order STAT.
- Appropriate personnel will collect samples as STAT.
- Send samples to laboratory STAT.
- Laboratory will receive into computer and take samples to appropriate department.
- Laboratory will perform Exposure HIV STAT per Chemistry policy.
- Chemistry will call results of Exposure HIV STAT to appropriate person (Employee Health, House Nursing Supervisor, Infection control, Medical provider)
NOTES
If a hospital employee is on hospital business and off hospital property, the employee would be considered under the same conditions as being on hospital property.
- Complete Laboratory Requisition Form.
- Record appropriate panel under “OTHER.” Include whether it is a source or exposed individual.
- Call Chemistry at SRHC (4830). This is not mandatory but helpful for communication and to allow staff to prepare.
- If tests are on a source specimen, order and send to laboratory STAT.
- If individual tests are ordered, mark appropriately, or record under “OTHER” or enter appropriate order in computer. Also, include statement that this is blood exposure and whether it is a source or exposed individual.
- Register per instructions on requisition. Laboratory will enter appropriate order in computer or complete downtime requisition.
- Laboratory will give requisition or copy of requisition to Chemistry supervisor or designee.
- Collect samples on source as STAT.
- Laboratory will receive into computer and take samples to appropriate department.
- Laboratory will perform Exposure HIV STAT per Chemistry policy.
- Tech will call results of Exposure HIV STAT to appropriate person (Employee Health 4752, House Nursing Supervisor, Infection control, Medical provider)
