Non Gynecological Cytology (Body Fluids, CSF, Breast fluid, Pneumocystis (PCP), etc.)
MessageALL FLUIDS FOR CYTOLOGY MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH A REQUISITION
Epic users: Please submit an Epic requisition and label specimen using an Epic label.
For non-Epic users or Epic users during a downtime: Please submit appropriate downtime form or a paper requisition with the following information: patient demographics, date and time of collection, specimen source (right side or left side, if relevant), test to be ordered, physician name, clinical diagnosis, any clinical history or information. For insurance information submit a copy of the insurance card or form from another information system.
To request additional tests such as Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia (PCP) stain on a bronchial specimen; For Epic users, please order under the comment section of the lab13 order. For non-Epic users or Epic users during a downtime, please clearly write the order on the paper request form.
Label the specimen container with patients name and birthdate and place in biohazard bag. If there is a delay in fresh specimen submission , or over a weekend, the specimen must be refrigerated or placed on ice for transport.

Preferred Specimen
Fresh specimens without added fixative or formalin.
Exceptions: Brush from a bronchial brushing immediately placed in a coplin jar with saline, bronchial slides immediately sprayed with SurgiPath fixative.

Instructions
Sputum collection: Collect deep cough specimen in early morning for 3 consecutive mornings.
Bronchial washings, Body fluid, spinal fluids esophageal washings and gastric washings: send specimen bag or container of fresh specimen immediately to lab.
Urine collection: Send fresh specimen immediately to lab. Label as (voided or catheterized).
Breast collection: Smears may be obtained by collecting nipple discharge directly on glass slides and immediately spraying with Surgipath spray fixative. Needle aspirations of breast cysts are to be sent immediately to lab.
Miscellaneous fluid: Send fresh specimen immediately to lab.

Transport Temperature
In Hospital: Specimens should be collected and brought to the laboratory as soon as possible. Refrigerate, if delayed 30 minutes or more.
Outside offices: Refrigerate fresh specimens immediately after collection and transport to laboratory as soon as possible.
After hours of Mon-Fri 7:30- 4:30 , give specimen to laboratory personnel to place in Cytology refrigerator.
Maintain slides at room temperature.

Improper labeling, improper collection; broken sides; improper fixation; sputum with food particles
