Glucose Tolerance Testing

Outreach/Outpatients: 1 lime green top tube for each interval
Inpatients: 1 lime green tube for each interval
Patient should FAST for 12 hours prior to the test. Verify the patient is fasting prior to the testing.
Patient should have had adequate food intake for the 3 days prior to the fast.
Test should only be performed on ambulatory patients as bed rest impaires glucose tolerance.
Stress should be avoided prior to and during the testing.
Test should be administered in the morning and patient should remain seated and abstain from smoking during the test.

Instructions
Oral Glucose Tolerance ( 2 or 3 hour)
2 hour tolderance on non pregnant adults:
30 minutes
1 hour
1 1/2 hour(90 minutes)
2 hours
Preganant patients:
1 hour
2 hour
3 hour
5. Send sample to SRH lab for testing.
- Verify that the patient is fasting. Remind the patient not to eat or drink until the test is completed except small sips of water.
- Collect fasting blood sugar.
- Give patient Trutol 100 according to the following dosage and guidelines(recommend serving chilled):
- Non-pregant adults: 75g. dextrose ( 7.5 oz. Trutol 100)
- Pregant women: 100g. dextrose ( 10.0 oz. Trutol 100)
- Children: 1.75 g. dextrose (0.175 oz. Trutol 100 ) per kilogram of body weight up to 75g. of dextrose ( 7.5 oz. Trutol 100 ).
- 1 kilogram equals 2.2 lbs. Divide weight in pounds by 2.2 to get number of kilograms. Then multiply number of kilograms times 0.175 to obtain number of Trutol ounces for patient to drink.
2 hour tolderance on non pregnant adults:
