24 hour urine specimen collected in a 24 hr urine container without preservative
It is preferable for the patient to be off medications
for three days before collection. Patient should avoid
tobacco, tea, coffee for three days before specimen
collection. Common antihypertensives (diuretics, ACE
inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, alpha and beta
blockers) cause minimal or no interference. Medications
which are alpha agonists (Aldomet), alpha blockers
(Dibenzyline) should be avoided 18-24 hours before
specimen collection.
Transport to SRHC laboratory within 8 hours

Preferred Specimen

5 mL of a 24-hour urine with 25 mL 6N HCl collected in a 24-hour urine container

Patient Preparation
It is preferable for the patient to be off medications for three days prior to collection. Patient should avoid tobacco, tea, coffee, for three days prior to specimen collection. Instructions

After urine collection, add 25 mL of 6N HCl to maintain a pH below 3.

Urine without preservative is acceptable if pH is below 6 and the sample is shipped frozen. Please note: Boric acid and Conc. Glacial acetic acid as a preservative are no longer acceptable.
