Preferred Specimen
2 mL plasma collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube

Minimum Volume
1 mL

Instructions
Do not freeze whole blood or samples stored in primary tube. Freshly drawn specimens (whole blood) may be stored at 2-25° C for up to 24 hours prior to centrifugation. Separate plasma from cells within 24 hours of collection by centrifugation. Follow manufacturer's instructions for collection tube handling.

Transport Temperature
Frozen

Specimen Stability
Room temperature: Unacceptable
Refrigerated: 6 days
Frozen: 6 months

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Sodium heparin (green-top) tube • Lithium heparin (green-top) tube • Unspun PPT tubes • Frozen whole blood

Methodology
Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction

Setup Schedule
Set up: Daily; Report available: 1-2 days

Reference Range
EBV DNA, QN PCRNot Detected (IU/mL)
EBV DNA, QN PCRNot Detected (Log IU/mL)

Clinical Significance
Monitoring EBV DNA levels by quantitative PCR in patients at risk of EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders may allow timely recognition of virus reactivation and permit installment of antiviral treatment. Reportable Range is 35.0-100,000,000 IU/mL (1.54-8.00 log IU/mL).
