Inoculate the aerobic (green cap) blood culture bottle with up to 10 ml of fluid in the bottle. Immediately after insertion of the fluid into the bottle mix by inverting the bottle several times to prevent clotting of the fluid with resulting fibrin formation and possible trapping of bacteria in the fibrin. Indicate if the patient is on antibiotic therapy (this is especially important for penicillin). The laboratory should be informed if mycotic (fungal) or mycobacterial (acid fast) septicemia is clinically suspected. Please indicate the fluid type of the specimen and label this source on the bottle.

Transport to the laboratory immediately after collection. DO NOT refrigerate body fluids such as CSF for culture.
