Instructions
Begin collection by rubbing the vein with a Chloraprep applicator for approximately thirty seconds, moving out in a concentric circle with a diameter of approximately 3 inches. Remove the caps from the blood culture bottle(s). Decontaminate the bottle tops with an alcohol swab. Do not use Betadine. Allow venipuncture site to dry. The site should not be touched. Blood should be drawn by use of a syringe. Inoculate the aerobic (green top) blood culture bottle first, then the anaerobic (orange top) blood culture bottle second. It is recommended to inoculate 10 mL of blood for each bottle. If < 2 mL is obtained in an adult, inoculate the aerobic bottle only. Immediately after insertion of blood into the bottle(s), mix by inverting each bottle several times to prevent clotting of the blood with resulting fibrin formation and possible trapping of bacteria in the fibrin. Indicate if the patient is on antibiotic therapy (this is especially important for penicillin). The laboratory should be informed if mycotic (fungal) or mycobacterial (acid fast) septicemia is clinically suspected. Please indicate the draw site of the specimen and label this source on the blood culture bottle(s).
Transport Temperature
Transport to the laboratory immediately after collection. DO NOT refrigerate body fluids such as blood for culture.
