Instructions
Apply tourniquet to determine best site for venipuncture. Remove tourniquet. Rub the vein with a Chloraprep applicator for approximately 2 minutes, moving out in a concentric circle with a diameter of approximately 3 inches. Allow venipuncture site to dry for 1 minute. The site should not be touched. Collect as follows: Midlands: Do not uncap the isolator tube. Decontaminate the top of the tube with a sterile alcohol prep. Do not use Betadine. Allow to dry. Reapply tourniquet and draw blood by use of a butterfly needle with luer adapter and tube holder or use of a needle and syringe. Collect 10 mL draw tube for adults or 1.5 mL draw tube for peds or difficult sticks. Inoculate the tube. Upstate: Remove the cap from the blood culture bottle. Decontaminate the top of the collection media with a sterile alcohol prep. Allow to dry. Do not use Betadine. Reapply tourniquet. Blood should be drawn by use of a syringe. Collect 10 mL of blood for adults or 1.5-10mL for peds (see age/weight guide). Inoculate the tube. Immediately after insertion of blood into the collection media, mix by inverting the tube/bottle several times to prevent clotting of the blood with resulting fibrin formation and possible trapping of bacteria in the fibrin. Indicate if the patient is on antibiotic therapy (this is especially important for penicillin). Please indicate the draw site of the specimen and label this source on the collection media.

Transport Temperature
Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.
