Collect at least two dry swabs from the same lesion. Use a sterile nylon, polyester, or Dacron swab. Do not use other types of swabs (cotton, rayon, or swabs with a wire shaft). Flocked swabs provided by Prisma Health are acceptable. Swab or brush lesion vigorously with two separate sterile dry swabs. Swabbing should remove cells from the base of the lesion but not produce blood. Place swabs in individual, dry sterile containers. Do not add liquid transport media. Refrigerate (2-8°C) or freeze (-20°C or lower) specimens within 1 hour after collection.
