Instructions
Follow specific instructions for collection: UROGENITAL SWABS: Use Hologic Aptima Unisex Swab Collection Kits provided by Client Services. For female endocervical samples- Use Hologic Aptima Unisex Swab Collection Kits 1. The Aptima Unisex Swab Collection Kit contains a white cleaning swab to remove cervical mucous before sample collection with the blue swab. 2. Use and discard the white swab, collect the sample with the blue swab. Remove the cap from the tube and place the blue swab in the tube containing the media. 3. The swab shaft should be broken off level with the top of the tube and the cap replaced on the tube. Take care not to touch the foil on the tube cap. 4. Label the tube with patient information and date/time collected. 5. Transport to laboratory. For male urethral samples - Use Hologic Aptima Unisex Swab Collection Kits 1. Discard the un-used white cleaning swab. 2. Remove the BLUE swab from packaging. Insert the swab 2 - 4 cm into the urethra and rotate clockwise for 3-5 seconds to ensure contact with all urethral surfaces. 3. Withdraw the swab. 4. Remove the cap from the tube and place the blue swab in the tube containing the media. 5. The swab shaft should be broken off level with the top of the tube and the cap replaced on the tube. Take care not to touch the foil on the tube cap. 6. Label the tube with patient information and date/time collected. 7. Transport to laboratory. Female & Male urine specimens: CANNOT BE PERFORMED ON CATHETERIZED, MID-STREAM OR CLEAN CATCH URINES, urine in grey top (culture) or tiger top (UA) tubes are not appropriate for this testing and will be rejected. Inpatients may have clear urine tube submitted-NO shared samples. Urine Specimen Collection - Collect First Catch (""dirty"" urine.) 1. The patient should not have urinated for at least 1 hour prior to specimen collection. Female patients should not cleanse the labial area prior to providing the specimen. 2. Collect the specimen in a sterile, plastic, preservative-free specimen collection cup. 3. The patient should collect the first 20-30 mL of voided urine (the first part of the stream - NOT midstream) into the urine collection cup. Collection of larger volumes of urine may result in rRNA target dilution that may reduce test sensitivity. 4. Label with patient identification and date/time collected 5. Urine transfer to the Hologic Aptima Urine Specimen Collection Kit. Urines should be added to the Hologic Aptima Urine Specimen Collection Kit within 24 hours of collection. Do not send urine in cups to the laboratory. NOTE: Wear clean gloves when handling the Urine Tube and the urine specimen. If gloves come in contact with the specimen, immediately change gloves to prevent contamination of other specimens. 6. Remove the Urine tube and the transfer pipette from their packaging. Label the Urine Tube with the patient identification and date/time collected. 7. Hold the Urine Tube upright and firmly tap the bottom of the tube on a flat surface to dislodge any large drops from inside the cap. Repeat if necessary. 8. Uncap the Urine Tube and use the transfer pipette to transfer 2 mL of urine into the tube. The correct volume of urine has been added when the fluid level is between the black lines on the fill window located on the Urine Tube. DO NOT overfill or under fill the tube. Overfilled and under filled tubes will be rejected. 9. Discard the transfer pipette. NOTE: The transfer pipette is intended for use with a single specimen. 10. Tighten the cap securely on the Urine Tube. 11. Invert the Urine Tube 3 - 4 times to ensure that the specimen and reagent are well mixed.
