Instructions

Swab, Vaginal/Rectal Swab Collection Information: Collect BEFORE use of lubricants. Wipe away excessive amounts of secretion or discharge, as large mucus/blood may interfere with performance of test. Open the COPAN collection device by partially peeling back the outer packaging. Remove dual swabs from the outer packaging by only touching the cap. Carefully insert both swabs into the patient’s vagina. First sample secretions from the mucosa of the lower one third part of the vagina. Rotate the swab three times to ensure uniform sample on both swabs. Next, using the same double swab, carefully insert the swab approximately 2.5 cm beyond the anal sphincter and gently rotate to sample the anal crypts. Place the swabs back into the tube. The swabs should go all the way into the tube until they rest on top of the sponge at the bottom of the tube.

Transport Temperature

If the specimens will be processed within 24 hours, store at room temperature. If the specimen will be tested after 24 hours, refrigerate. Store specimen at 2-8 degrees C.
