Instructions
Adult: Minimum 2.5 mL blood *Pediatric minimum: 1 full microtainer* Collect 1 hour after ingestion of 50 gm Glucola. Capillary Specimens are not recommended.  Each sample should be collected in the same type collection tube.

Transport Temperature
Upstate: Freshly drawn plasma is the preferred specimen.  Acceptable anticoagulants are lithium heparin and potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride.  The use of fluoride as a glycolysis inhibitor is recommended. Whole blood specimens collected in the potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride grey top tube are stable for 24 hours unspun. Tubes of blood are to be kept closed at all times and in a vertical position.  It is required that the plasma be physically separated from contact with cells within two hours from the time of collection. Separated specimens are stable for 2 days at 20 to 25°C, 7 days at 2 to 8°C, or 1 day at -20°C or colder.  Stored specimens must be inspected for particulates.  If present, mix and centrifuge the specimen to remove particulates prior to testing.  (Glucose in whole blood stored at room temperature is metabolized at a rate of approximately 5% per hour).   Midlands: Freshly drawn plasma is the preferred specimen.  Acceptable anticoagulant is lithium heparin.  Tubes of blood are to be kept closed at all times and in a vertical position.  It is required that the plasma be physically separated from contact with cells within two hours from the time of collection.
