It is recommended that tubes of blood are to be kept closed at all times and in a vertical position. It is required that the serum or plasma be physically separated from contact with cells within two hours from the time of collection. Results may be affected if not centrifuged and separated within 2 hours of collection.   When collecting in a Red Top Collection:  Allow collection tube to stand for 1 hour before centrifugation.   Analyze fresh specimens, if possible. Separated samples may be stored at 4 to 8°C for up to 7 days and frozen at -20°C for up to 14 days. Stored specimens must be inspected for particulates. If present, mix and centrifuge the specimen to remove.
