Instructions
Heparin and serum samples should not be used interchangeably during a series. Pediatric collection tubes acceptable for Pediatric Patients only, with documented physician approval. Adult: Minimum 2.5 mL blood *Pediatric minimum: 1 full microtainer*
Transport Temperature
Lab Only: Heparin and serum samples should not be used interchangeably during a series. Pediatric tubes and short sample adult tubes may give ""less than optimal"" results, and are NOT recommended for use by the instrument manufacturer. These tubes are acceptable ONLY when a PHYSICIAN specifically requests that the test be performed on a pediatric tube or a short sample adult tube. External lab comments must be resulted with the comment SHORT (""Results may be affected due to inappropriate specimen.""), and free text ""Troponin I performed per Dr. ___________."" It is recommended that tubes of blood are to be kept closed at all times and in a vertical position. It is required that the serum or plasma be physically separated from contact with cells within two hours from the time of collection. Analyze fresh specimens, if possible. If testing will be delayed more than 8 hours, remove plasma or serum from the red blood cells, clot or separator gel. Specimens removed from the red blood cells, clot or separator gel may be stored at 2 to 8°C for up to 3 days and frozen at -20°C for up to 30 days. Stored specimens must be inspected for particulates. If present, mix and centrifuge the specimen to remove particulates prior to testing. Multiple freeze-thaw cycles of specimens should be avoided. Specimens must be mixed THOROUGHLY after thawing, by LOW speed vortexing or by gently inverting, and centrifuged prior to use to remove red blood cells or particulate matter to ensure consistency in the results.
