Clinical Significance
Fondaparinux sodium (Arixtra) is a factor Xa inhibitor indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in certain patient populations. The antithrombotic activity of Arixtra is the result of antithrombin III-mediated selective inhibition of Factor Xa. Neutralization of factor Xa interrupts thrombin formation and thrombus development. The anti-Factor Xa activity of the drug can be measured using the chromogenic anti-Xa method using Arixtra as the calibrator.
