Preferred Specimen
One 4 mL serum separator tube. Also acceptable: lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).


Minimum Volume
1 mL serum or plasma, frozen.  (Min 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Transport Temperature
1 mL serum or plasma, frozen.  (Min 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells:  Ambient:  8 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 month


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Heparinized plasma, vitreous and I.V. fluids. Specimens collected in gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate). Hemolyzed specimens.

Limitations
Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature.  Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.


Clinical Significance
This assay reacts on a nearly equimolar basis with insulin aspart, insulin glargine, and insulin lispro.  To convert to pmol/L, multiply µIU/mL by 6.0.
