Preferred Specimen
One 5 mL plain red or one 7 mL gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate). Also acceptable: EDTA or plasma separator tube.


Minimum Volume
2 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.  Sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate whole blood may be transported in the original container.


Transport Temperature
2 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.  Sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate whole blood may be transported in the original container.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 4 hours, if tightly capped; Refrigerated: 1 week, if tightly capped; Frozen: 6 months, except whole blood

Limitations
For medical purposes only. Do not freeze whole blood.  Separate serum or plasma from cells immediately after collection and transfer to a tightly-capped tube to minimize alcohol loss.
