Preferred Specimen
One 5 mL plain red.  EDTA acceptable.


Minimum Volume
1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in orignal tube.


Transport Temperature
1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in orignal tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 days; Refrigerated: 2 days; Frozen: 2 months


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Separator tubes.

Clinical Significance
This result represents the total level of all detectable tricyclic antidepressants present.  Tricyclic antidepressants detectable with this assay include: amitriptyline, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline, protriptyline, and trimipramine.Levels of tricyclic antidepressants in the therapeutic range may not be detectable.  False-positive results may occur with the following drugs: Seroquel® (quetiapine fumarate),  Trileptal® (oxcarbazepine), Benadryl® (diphenhydramine) at toxic concentrations, Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine), Thioridazine, and Thorazine® (chlorpromazine).
