Preferred Specimen
One 5 mL plain red.


Minimum Volume
1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 weeks; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 45 days


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Plasma.  Specimens collected in separator tubes, sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate, or sodium citrate anticoagulants.

Limitations
Avoid use of separator tubes. 


Clinical Significance
Acetaminophen concentrations greater than 150 µg/mL at four hours after ingestion and 40 µg/mL at 12 hours after ingestion are often associated with toxicity.
