Preferred Specimen
One 3 mL plain red. Also acceptable: green (sodium or lithium heparin).
Minimum Volume
1 mL serum or plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.2 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.
Transport Temperature
1 mL serum or plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.2 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.
Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 2 weeks
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimens collected in lavender (EDTA), lt. blue (sodium citrate), gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate), or separator tubes. Grossly hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic specimens.

Limitations
Draw 10 minutes before next infusion. Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.
Clinical Significance
Minimum serum concentration for infection control is 10 µg/mL; a target therapeutic range of 15-20 µg/mL is recommended for significant infections such as S. aureus. Toxicity does not correlate well with serum concentrations.
