Preferred Specimen
One 5 mL plain red.


Minimum Volume
1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL) Also acceptable: plasma (heparin).  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Transport Temperature
1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL) Also acceptable: plasma (heparin).  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 month


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Separator tubes.  Plasma collected in the presence of citrate or oxalate/fluoride or EDTA. Hemolyzed specimens.

Limitations
Allow specimen to clot completely.  Separate serum or plasma from cells and freeze if prolonged transport.  Specimens should not be repeatedly frozen and thawed.
