Preferred Specimen
One 4 mL plain red or serum separator tube.  Also acceptable: green (sodium or lithium heparin).


Minimum Volume
2 mL serum or plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Transport Temperature
2 mL serum or plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 2 days; Frozen: 6 months


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimens collected in EDTA.

Limitations
Allow serum specimen to clot fully at room temperature before centrifuging.  Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. If requesting Ionized Calcium with PTH, submit two separate specimens. Refer to Calcium, Ionized, Serum (0020135) for requirements.
