Preferred Specimen
Aspirate or purulent material. Source of specimen is required.  If specifically obtaining a specimen from an abscess use code 6000 - Culture, Abscess.


Minimum Volume
Aspirate fluid in sterile, capped syringe; purulent material in sterile tube, anaerobe transport media, or swab in bacterial transport media at 20-25°C.


Transport Temperature
Aspirate fluid in sterile, capped syringe; purulent material in sterile tube, anaerobe transport media, or swab in bacterial transport media at 20-25°C.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Nonsterile or leaking containers, dry materials, dry swabs, and syringes with needle attached.


Methodology
Standard reference procedures for bacterial stain, aerobic culture, and identification. Anaerobe Culture is performed on properly collected specimens (Anaerobe culture 0060143).
