Stool. Preserve in enteric transport media immediately or transport to laboratory fresh within 1 hour.


Minimum Volume
Stool in enteric transport media at 2-8°C.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Nonsterile or leaking containers, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hours), dry specimens, delayed transport without use of appropriate preservative.


Methodology
Standard reference procedures for Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter culture and identification.  If Yersinia is suspected it may be requested, but is not normally included.
