Preferred Specimen
Aspirate of peritoneal, thoracentesis, synovial, pericardial, amniotic, or culdocentesis fluid.  Source of specimen is required.


Minimum Volume
Sterile-capped syringe (needle removed), sterile tube, container or anaerobe gel transport tube.Send immediately to PMC at 20-25°C.  Place each specimen in an individual sealed bag. Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Transport Temperature
Sterile-capped syringe (needle removed), sterile tube, container or anaerobe gel transport tube.Send immediately to PMC at 20-25°C.  Place each specimen in an individual sealed bag. Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Specimen Stability
"Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable
PMC collected samples Ambient: 1 hour"


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Nonsterile or leaking containers. Specimens submitted in anticoagulant other than SPS.  Syringes with  needle attached.

Standard reference procedures for bacterial stain, aerobic culture, and identification. Anaerobe culture performed on properly collected specimens
