Preferred Specimen
One 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA). (Min: 3 mL) Collection tube must be siliconized glass or plastic.


Minimum Volume
1 mL plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Transport Temperature
1 mL plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 3 months


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Serum.  Heparinized plasma.  Nonfrozen specimens. Grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens.

Limitations
CRITICAL FROZEN. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Separate plasma from cells and freeze ASAP.


Clinical Significance
Some types of synthetic ACTH are not detected by this assay.
