Preferred Specimen
Collect clean catch urine specimen. Refrigerate urine specimen if testing can not be done within one hour of collection. For blood or serum HCG, use unit code 2500.


Minimum Volume
1 mL aliquot  urine at 2-8°C. Submit specimen in an PMC Standard Transport Tube.


Transport Temperature
1 mL aliquot  urine at 2-8°C. Submit specimen in an PMC Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable

Limitations
Do not freeze.  First-morning urine is the preferred specimen as it usually contains the highest concentration of beta-hCG; however, any specimen is suitable for testing.
