Preferred Specimen
One 4 mL plasma separator tube or serum separator tube.


Minimum Volume
1 mL plasma or serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.2 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Transport Temperature
1 mL plasma or serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.2 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 4 days; Refrigerated: 3 weeks; Frozen: 3 months


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimens containing EDTA, sodium/fluoride, oxalate, or sodium citrate.  Grossly hemolyzed specimens.  Specimens should not be collected from patients receiving deferoxamine until six hours after last dose.

Limitations
Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.
