Preferred Specimen
One 4 mL serum separator tube or plasma separator tube.Collect one 4.5 mL green top tube with gel (PST) or yellow top tube (SST), completely filled. Gently invert tube 5  times immediately after collection. Test included in BMP, CMP, RFP,  and Newborn 9. For ionized calcium, use order code 2150.


Minimum Volume
1 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.2 mL) Submit specimen in an PMC Standard Transport Tube.


Transport Temperature
1 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.2 mL) Submit specimen in an PMC Standard Transport Tube.


Specimen Stability
After separation from cells: Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated: 3 weeks; Frozen: 8 months


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
EDTA, citrate, oxalate, and specimens from patients receiving EDTA therapy or Hypaque.

Limitations
Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.


Clinical Significance
"Birth to 34 days:       6.3-11.9 mg/dL
35 days to 3 years    8.9-11.3 mg/dL
3 years to adult        8.8-10.5 mg/dL"
