Preferred Specimen
One 3 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA), or two unstained whole blood smears.


Minimum Volume
3 mL whole blood at 2-8°C or two unstained whole blood smears. (Min: 0.5 mL)


Instructions
Specimens must be well mixed prior to making smears.


Transport Temperature
3 mL whole blood at 2-8°C or two unstained whole blood smears. (Min: 0.5 mL)


Specimen Stability
Without smears: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours; Frozen: UnacceptableWith smears: Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Frozen or clotted specimens.
