Instructions
Swab area of vaginal discharge in 1 ml sterile saline in a sterile screw cap container. Disinfect skin and nails with alcohol. Scrape area with blade of edge of microscope slide. Trim hair with sterile blade or scissor.
Transport Container
Submit swab of vaginal discharge in 1 ml sterile saline. Skin/nail scrapings or hair sample in dry sterile screw cap container.
Transport Temperature
Ambient.
Specimen Stability
= 24 hours ambient; = 48 hours refrigerated.
Methodology
Examination of clinical material mixed with 20% KOH under light microscope.
Setup Schedule
Specimens received and tested 24/7.
Report Available
Vaginal swab from E.D./L&D: 1 hour of receipt in testing area. Fungal KOH: Monday - Friday testing/reporting.
Limitations
Yield directly related to quality of specimen submitted and presence of organisms in quantities within the limits of detection via light microscopy.
Clinical Significance
Aid in diagnosis of BV (Bacterial Vaginosis). Skin/hair/nails useful in determining presence of fungal infection.
