Performed on all cultures except: Blood, Nasal, Throat, Stool, Urine, IV catheter tips.


Minimum Volume
Quantity sufficient to provide visible smear of material on microscope slide.


Instructions
Aseptically obtain clinical material from area of infection.


Transport Container
Steril screw cap container, ESwab, BD CultureSwab, other double swab transport. Properly labeled microscope slide submitted in protective transport container (slide holder).


Transport Temperature
Ambient.


Specimen Stability
Dependent on body site and transport.


Methodology
Conventional Gram's staining procedure with examination via light microscopy.

Setup Schedule
Specimens received and processed 24/7.


Report Available
Typically same shift. STAT available (30 minutes to 1 hour depending on specimen).


Limitations
Yield directly related to quality of specimen submitted and presence of organisms in quantities within the limits of detection via light microscopy.
