Preferred Specimen
Only performed on fresh stool or preserved in Carey Blair transport medium.


Minimum Volume
0.5 gram

Fecal aspirate.


Instructions
Obtain stool or fecal aspirate specimen and submit for culture ASAP


Transport Container
Sterile screw cap container or C&S ParaPak vial (orange cap vial) or ParaPak white cap vial.


Transport Temperature
Ambient = 4 hours. = 24 hours refrigerated.


Specimen Stability
Ambient = 4 hours. = 24 hours refrigerated.


Methodology
Gram's stain of stool smear.

Setup Schedule
Specimens received and processed 24/7.


Report Available
= 24 hours routinely; typically same shift.


Limitations
Detection of intact PMNs. Yield directly related to quality of specimen submitted. Prolonged transport post collection may render PMNs undetectable due to lysis from acidic by-products in the stool.


Clinical Significance
Presence and quantity may be helpful in the diagnosis of certain gastroenteritis disease states.
