Preferred Specimen
Urine submitted in gray top tube.

Other Acceptable Specimens
Urine submitted to Microbiology within 2 hours of collection in sterile tube or screw cap cup without preservative. UriCult culture paddle.


Instructions
Obtain urine via clean catch, in/out catheter or from line of indwelling catheter; suprapubic aspirate.


Transport Container
Gray top tube.


Transport Temperature
Ambient of gray top. Refrigerate within two hours collection and submit to lab within 24 hours if sterile tube/cup without preservative.


Specimen Stability
Gray top tube: 72 hours ambient/refrigerated. Sterile tube/cup 2 hours ambient, 24 hours refrigerated.


Methodology
Conventional culture using 1.0 µL calibrated loop.

Setup Schedule
Culture received and processed 24/7.


Report Available
Preliminary reports daily and when significant results detected. Final report after 26 hours if non-invasive collection method and 2 days if invasive collection method.


Limitations
Culture yield directly related to quality of specimen submitted.


Clinical Significance
= isolates >10,000 cfu worked up. 2 or greater isolates reported as probably contamination. Culture plate saved for 7 days unless skin flora - saved until end of next day.
