Routinely cultured for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Aeromonas, Plesiomonas. Comment regarding normal enteric flora status. Susceptibility testing performed as appropriate. No susceptibility testing performed on Campylobacter isolates.


Preferred Specimen
Stool, fecal aspirate.


Minimum Volume
1 gram


Other Acceptable Specimens
Swab of feces (neonates, elderly).


Instructions
Collect raw stool in sterile screw cap container. Avoid urine contamination.


Transport Container
Sterile screw cap container; orange ParaPak C&S vial; white ParaPak vial.


Transport Temperature
Ambient or refrigerated.


Specimen Stability
8 hours raw stool. 24 hours in C&S ParaPak vial.


Methodology
Conventional culture with selective/differential media.

Setup Schedule
Cultures accepted 24/7.


Report Available
Preliminary reports daily and when significant results detected. Final report after 2 days.


Limitations
Culture yield directly related to quality of specimen submitted.


Clinical Significance
Stool culture isolates typically submitted to the GA Public Health Lab for typing/confirmation.
