Preferred Specimen
Expectorated or induced sputum; surgically obtained sinus aspirate/contents.


Minimum Volume
5 ml


Other Acceptable Specimens
Middle ear specimens.


Instructions
Patient should provide first morning, deep cough sputum. Induce if unable to provide suitable expectorate sputum specimen.


Transport Container
Sterile screw cap container. Capped Luken trap tube/container.


Transport Temperature
Ambient.


Specimen Stability
8 hours at ambient temperature. Up to 24 hours refrigerated.


Methodology
Conventional culture.

Setup Schedule
Cultures accepted 24/7.


Report Available
Preliminary reports daily and when significant results detected. Final report after 2 days.


Limitations
Culture yield directly related to quality of specimen submitted. Expectorated sputum specimen is less than optimal for culture.

Unknown clinical significance.
