Includes
Aerobic and anaerobic culture (if anaerobic bottle submitted). Does not include Gram stain.


Preferred Specimen
Asceptically inoculate and label one aerobic blood culture bottle (green or blue) and one anaerobic blood culture bottle (purple or orange) with up to 10 ml fluid from a normally sterile body site. Note: Do not use for CSF culture. Apply labels lengthwise on the bottles, rather than around.


Minimum Volume
5 ml per bottle.


Instructions
Aseptically transfer fluid collected from a normally sterile body site into one aerobic (green or blue) and one anaerobic (purple or orange) blood culture bottle. Submit to laboratory ASAP.

One aerobic (green or blue) and one anaerobic (purple or orange) blood culture bottle.

Ambient


Specimen Stability
16 hours (optimally) at ambient temperature.


Methodology
Continuous monitoring system (same as blood cultures).

Setup Schedule
Cultures accepted 24/7.


Report Available
No growth cultures updated every 24 hours around the clock. Final no growth cultures reported after 5 days incubation.


Limitations
Separate orders required for AFB and fungus cultures. Culture yield directly related to quality and quantity of specimen submitted
