Preferred Specimen
Deliver properly identified specimens, including SOURCE, to Lab ASAP. Check screw caps for secure fit before transport. Do NOT transport with Luken trap tubing attached.

Instructions
Collection preformed by physician.
Transport Container
Sterile screw cap container. No preservative. Brush specimens in special tube with blue cap insert and Ringer's solution.
Transport Temperature
Label with patient's full name and date of birth or LIS label and submit to Microbiology immediately. Transport at ambient temperature. Do not refrigerate
Specimen Stability
Excessive delays in transport are not acceptable as bacterial survival rates outside the body vary based on species.
Methodology
Conventional culture.
Setup Schedule
Cultures set up 24/7.
Report Available
Preliminary reports daily and when significant results detected. Final report after 2 days (wash and BAL); 6 days (brush, biopsy).
Limitations
Does not include culture for AFB, fungus or viruses.
