Acid Fast bacteria culture including M. tuberculosis and rapid growers. AFB stain not included.
Preferred Specimen
A sinlgle fully filled Wampole Isolator 10 Tube.
Minimum Volume
5 ml
Other Acceptable Specimens
Bone marrow collected in the small Isolator tube.
Instructions
Use Blood Culture Skin Prep procedure (chlorhexidine). Do not draw from IV lines. Obtain collection tube from PAH Microbiology.
Transport Container
Wampole Isolator 10 Tube (yellow stopper).
Transport Temperature
Submit to PAH Microbiology at ambient temperature within 4 hours collection.
Specimen Stability
16 hours at ambient temperature
Methodology
Lysis centrifugation specimen preparation; conventional AFB culture on solid media.
Setup Schedule
Specimen receipt: 24 hours, 7 days/week. Specimen processing and culture set up: M-F.
Report Available
Weekly culture updates. Final no growth report after 8 weeks incubation.
