Preferred Specimen
Nasopharyngyl swab submitted in Universal Viral Transport Medium (UVT)


Instructions
Nasopharyngeal swab collected by Respiratory Care staff.


Transport Container
UVT (or equivalent viral transport device). Obtain collection kit from Microbiology or Respiratory Care.


Transport Temperature
Submit to PAH Microbiology immediately or on ice or on cold pack if transport > 30 minutes.


Specimen Stability
Stable in UVT (or equivalent) for up to 3 days, refrigerated.


Methodology
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Cepheid GeneXpert.

Setup Schedule
24 hours, 7 days/week.


Report Available
Within 2 hours of receipt by PAH laboratory.


Limitations
Interference seen in the presence of excessive blood, mucin, some nasal sprays, throat sprays and lozenges containing menthol, mupirocin ointment and systemic tobramycin.


Clinical Significance
This assay has not been evaluated for use in patients receiving intranasally administered influenza vaccine.
