Other Acceptable Specimens
Unpreserved urine in a sterile screw cap container. Must be transferred to transport tube within 24 hours of collection.
Instructions
Endocervical or patient self-collected vaginal swab: Use large swab to clean mucus away from cervical os and discard. Use smaller swab to sample cervix or vagina and break off in Xpert collection device (pink cap) - OR - Female or male first morning urine or non-clean catch urine submitted in Xpert urine collection tube (yellow cap).
Transport Container
Swabs: Xpert CT/NG Vaginal/Endocervical Specimen Collection Kit. Urine: Xpert CT/NG Urine Specimen Collection Kit. Obtain kits from Microbiology.
Transport Temperature
Female urine transferred to Xpert collection device: stabel for 3 days at room temperature and up to 45 days refrigerated. Male urine transferred to Xpert collection device: stable up to 45 days room temperature or refrigerated. Swabs in the Xpert transfer device up to 60 days at room temperature or refrigerated.
Methodology
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Cepheid GeneXpert.
Setup Schedule
Monday - Friday; first shift.
Report Available
Within 24 hours of receipt of specimen Sunday - Thursday.
Limitations
Interference seen with excessive blood, bilirubin, mucin, Vagisil®. Not evaluated for use with populations <14 years of age. Not for medico-legal use.
