Preferred Specimen
Unformed (liquid or soft) stool.


Other Acceptable Specimens
Fecal aspirate.


Instructions
Collect a single unformed stool specimen from symptomatic patient only.


Transport Container
Sterile screw cap container. No preservative.


Transport Temperature
Refrigerate. Only stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours.


Specimen Stability
Stable for up to 5 days, refrigerated.


Methodology
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Cepheid GeneXpert.

Setup Schedule
7 days/week, first shift, batched throughout the day.


Report Available
Within 24 hours of receipt of stool. Same day if received during day shift hours.


Limitations
Does not differentiate NAP1 strains. PCR reaction inhibited by zinc oxide paste and VagisilĀ®.


Clinical Significance
The clinical significance of a positive test not well defined in patients <1 year of age.
