If the specimen is not immediately sent to the Piedmont Lab within an hour of collection, spin and freeze platelet free plasma. Note citrated plasma on the pour off tube. See instructions below.

Preferred Specimen
Light blue top tube (Citrated blood 9:1 (blood to anticoagulant) 3.2% sodium citrate)


Minimum Volume
Full tube, no partial fills.


Instructions
Centrifuge light blue-top tube 15 minutes at approx. 1500 x g within 60 minutes of collection. Using a plastic pipette, remove plasma, taking care to avoid the WBC/platelet buffy layer and place into a plastic vial. Centrifuge a second time and transfer platelet-poor plasma into a new plastic vial. Plasma must be free of platelets (< 10,000/mcL). Freeze immediately and sent frozen to Piedmont Lab.


Specimen Stability
8 hours room temperature or 1 month frozen plasma
