Preferred Specimen
Adults: 8-10 mL of whole blood in each of BD BACTEC™ Plus Aerobic/F (blue label and cap) and Lytic/10 Anaerobic/F bottles (purple label and cap)

Neonates and Children 1 to 6 years: 1-3 mL of blood in a BACTEC™ Peds Plus/F bottle

Children weighing 30-80 lbs: 3 mL of blood in BD BACTEC™ Peds Plus/F bottle or 8-10 mL of blood in BD BACTEC™ Plus Aerobic/F and Lytic/10 Anaerobic/F bottles


Minimum Volume
3 mL Adult
0.5 mL Neonates and Children (1-6 years)
0.5-1 mL Children weighing 30-80 lbs


Other Acceptable Specimens
Bone marrow cultures:
For adults, use 1 BACTEC™ Plus Aerobic/F and 1 BACTEC™ Lytic/10 Anaerobic/F bottles.
For children, use a BACTEC™ Peds Plus Aerobic/F bottle for aerobic and anaerobic testing.
Blood culture bottles compatible with local automated instrumentation.

Do not pre-incubate bottles prior to shipment.
