Instructions
Use universal precautions for the safe handling and processing of virology specimens.
All work must be perfomed in the Class II biological safety laminar flow hood.
Wear gloves when working with all open culture tubes and clinical material.
Discard all waste into the designated reservoir containing a 10% bleach solution adjusted to maintain an acid pH and dispose of by standard means.
Decontaminate the hood with an appropriate disinfectant after each use.
Cover any spill with a bleach solution and paper towels. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes before wiping up.

Specimens should be delivered to the laboratory promptly, ideally within 2-4hrs of sample collection and preferably within 1 day of collection. This may not be possible for laboratories that refer samples to offsite reference laboratories for viral testing. Unless otherwise indicated, specimens should be refrigerated or frozen depending on the duration of storage prior to testing.
