B-Cell Gene Rearrangement, Southern Blot
Message"This assay can be used to detect clonal B-cell rearrangements in blood, bone marrow, and tissue specimens. The presence of monoclonal gene rearrangement usually, but not always, reflects the presence of a B-lymphocytic neoplasm, while polyclonal gene rearrangement patterns are found in benign reactive conditions. Thus, the results of these studies can assist in the diagnosis of lymphoproliferative disorders.

Transport Container
"Lavender-top (EDTA) tube, yellow-top (ACD-A) tube, or tissue in lymph node transport bottle
"
"
Transport Temperature
"Maintain specimen at room temperature. Some specimen types may be submitted frozen; call 800-345-4363 for instructions.
"
"
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
"Specimen more than 48 hours old; clotted blood
"
"
Methodology
"Southern blot analysis "
Limitations
"The Southern blot analysis may not detect a clonal population if it represents <10% of the total cells in the specimen. The B-Cell Gene Rearrangement, PCR [480716] test can be used to detect smaller populations of malignant cells in blood, bone marrow, and tissue (both fresh and paraffin-embedded).
