Clinical Significance
Immuostaining for p57, a nuclear cell cycle regulator, can help discriminate between complete hydatidiform mole, which lacks p57 expression in cytotrophoblasts, from partial hydatidiform mole and hydropic abortion where p57 expression is intact. Intervillous trophoblastic islands (IVTIs) demonstrate nuclear labeling in all three entities and can serve as an internal control.
