Preferred Specimen
5.0 mL Plasma

Instructions
SPECIAL HANDLING:  The specimen should be transported at room temperature.  The whole blood specimen is checked for clot formation by gentle inversion and centrifued and tested within 24 hours from the time of collection.  Centrifuge the capped specimen tube for a minimum of 15 minutes at 1500g to consistently produce platelet poor plasma (platelet count < 10 x 109 /L).  To separate plasma, use a plastic transfer pipette; remove the plasma to a plastic tube without disturbing the buffy coat.  If testing is not complete within 24 hours, the plasma may be stored frozen at <-20oC or below for up to 2 weeks or -70oC or below for long term storage.  Frozen plasma samples must be rapidly thawed at 37oC while gentle mixing and tested immediately.  Mixing is critical before testing.
